UPMC
St. Margaret School of Practical Nursing
We promote
self-direction, accountability, and personal and professional
responsibility among our nursing students. To prepare competent
and compassionate practical nurses who develop lifelong, effective
learning and problem solving skills we provide:
Admission
Requirements
- graduate
from an accredited high school or a general equivalency diploma
(GED) is required
- minimum
composite percentage score of 55 on the pre-admission test,
with minimum scores of 50 in math and 52 in reading
- two (2)
positive recommendations -- student
evaluation form (pdf file)
- complete
the application
(pdf file)
- submit
a narrative, no more than one typed page, to answer "What
does becoming a nurse mean to you?"
- positive
interview with the director or assistant director of the School
of Practical Nursing
There are
no pre-requisite courses for the Practical Nursing Program. Advanced
standing is available for students who transfer from other nursing
education programs.
Cost
and Financial Aid
Tuition and fees, not including uniforms and books, are $9,553
for the St. Margaret campus and $11,335 for the McKeesport campus.The
School participates in programs that offer Pell Grant and Federal
Stafford Loans and Parent Loans. Other areas of assistance include:

Scholarships
are available from various sources. All students are made aware
of scholarship sources as they become available to the Financial
Aid Administrator. Tuition Forgiveness Loans are available to
all students choosing to work for UPMC following graduation.

UPMC St. Margaret campus:
Clinical
practicum experiences take place at UPMC St. Margaret; Family
Health Centers associated with UPMC St. Margaret; and long-term
care residences that are part of UPMC Senior Living. Students
receive practicum experience in maternal-child nursing at Magee-Womens
Hospital and Children’s Institute. Students also are
provided with a variety of experiences in various community agencies.
At
UPMC McKeesport campus:
Clinical practicum experiences take place at UPMC McKeesport;
Family Health Centers affiliated with UPMC McKeesport or UPMC
St. Margaret; and various long-term care residences. Students

in Blawnox, approximately 1.8 miles from UPMC St. Margaret.
From
the South:
Route 28 to Exit 9, Blawnox. Merge onto Freeport Road. Turn right
onto Blaw Avenue (third light). Follow two blocks to Seventh Street.
School building is white finish and glass on the right.
From the North:
Route 28 South to Exit 8, Fox Chapel. Turn right off the exit
ramp. At second light, turn left onto Freeport Road. Follow to
third light and turn right onto Blaw Avenue. Follow two blocks
to Seventh Street. School building is white finish and glass on
