St. Margaret's Health Sciences Library
The Health Sciences Library at UPMC St. Margaret serves physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and all hospital employees. The UPMC St. Margaret Family Practice Residency Program, UPMC St. Margaret Schools of Nursing, Medical Education, and Nursing Education, department are key supporters of the library.
Patients, family members and members of the community are also welcome to use the library resources and services, during scheduled business hours. We provide health and disease specific research, internet, and email access and recreational reading materials.
Our Mission
- To provide high
quality, timely information services and user instruction in a cost
effective manner to UPMC St. Margaret's healthcare professionals, patients,
and family members and to the members of its community.
- To provide a library
collection to meet the basic information needs of professionals serving
UPMC St. Margaret, fellows, residents, and students in training.
- To serve as a
liaison to the Health
Systems Library System (HSLS), providing and promoting University
of Pittsburgh Medical Center electronic resources to the community of
UPMC St. Margaret.
Hours
& Location
The library is located on the first floor of the hospital, and it is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is open on weekends and evenings by appointment..
Changes to regular
library hours will be posted at the entrance.
UPMC St. Margaret
employees may obtain an after-hours access code by completing a form
available in the library.
Services
We Offer
Computer & Internet Access
The UPMC St. Margaret library has nine Internet-accessible computers available for research and small group instruction. All computers have access to HSLS, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet Explorer and other clinical and business applications. Designated computers have School of Nursing curriculum-required applications. All computers are connected to laser printers. Wireless access is available to those with laptop computers.
Individualized and group instruction is available in the library. Appointments are requested, but not required. Library staff is available during business hours to assist patrons in locating information, using business application software and using curriculum-based applications.
A laptop is available for use in and outside the hospital. Employees signing out the laptop are responsible for any loss or damage incurred to the equipment under their use. Reservations for the laptop are requested in advance of use.
HSLS Online Access
The Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) of the University of Pittsburgh provides electronic access to valuable health information resources and expands services offered by UPMC St. Margaret. Registered users of the HSLS Online can gain remote access to electronic resources from offsite and wireless computers.

To sign up for remote access, see instructions at http://www.hsls.pitt.edu/services/account. A UPMC email account is required for remote access. Users must register via the website.
Equipment Available for Use
- 9 Internet-accessible computers with 3.5 inch floppy drives and DVD Players.
- 2 laserjet printers with duplexing capability
- 1 color printer (staff only)
- 1 VCR and monitor
- 2 photocopiers (1 for staff use only)
Patient and Family Education
The library is open to patients and family members during business hours:
Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and in the evenings and on weekends by appointment.
Patients or family members may search the Internet for health-related materials. Material may also be printed from Internet searches. The library staff will also assist in locating appropriate materials, searching UPMC and UPMC St. Margaret approved materials.

Patient and family information is provided as a public service and is not intended to replace the care and direction provided by your physician.
Gifts & Donations
Gifts and donations to the library are welcomed. When a memorial contribution is made, a letter is written by the librarian to the contributor as well as the family of the deceased. If a book is purchased, a memorial book plate is placed in the front of the book.
Book donations to the library will be acknowledged by letter. Donations are accepted with the understanding that any/all items not needed by the library will be discarded.
